The 4th generation of Sony UWP wireless have been completely redesigned compared to the previous two generations, they are unfortunately now quite time consuming to modify. (This time Sony decided instead of removing four screws to access the internals you now need 15 screws with different thread lengths and pitch, tri security screws and a sticker to make it extra fun!) I was curious what benefit the SMA mod would have to the 4th generation of Sony UWP as they're all very new so I did some tests with three brand new sets. One set had both receiver and transmitter SMA modded, one set with just the receiver modded and one stock. The difference was at first subtle but upon turning around at the end of my range test to face the receivers, only the fully SMA modded set worked while the other two sets were completly out of range. Quite interesting to see! Sony UWP wireless bodypack receivers and transmitters are fantastic wireless devices but are prone to having their built-in antennas break causing weak signal and dropouts. It's also worth avoiding bendable articulating antennas, I find theyre regularly worn out on older models which use the same design, even $100+ SMA Lectrosonics antennas have the same issue. A good way to improve on them is called the SMA mod. This requires custom fitting an SMA mount so that a standard SMA antenna can be added. The result is that they perform better than stock even when in brand new condition. With this mod you get longer range and stronger signal stability with close to zero drop-outs compared to stock, plus with the convenience of a removable and user replaceable flexible SMA antenna with the ability to connect the device to larger RF antenna systems. Mod wiring is internally soldered with a high gauge soft wire for flexibility on the transmitters, I also have a new solder free technique for the receivers which utilises the original mini-RF antenna port. No original parts are cut or modified and is 100% reversible if desired. All original antennas and parts are returned with each order I have been regularly using my personal SMA modified Sennheiser G3’s on film and TV sets since 2017 and have implemented new techniques over the years.
